As part of an ongoing programme of continuous improvement of all
processes that ensure delivery of complex projects to exacting
standards the Murphy Group embarked upon a programme to
implement a health and safety management system that was
compliant with OHSAS 18001 across all its construction
activities. With a workforce of over 3000 and a national and
international business the Group are on schedule to achieve
final certification in March 2006, which coincides with the
company's 55th anniversary. This is a fitting reward for a
company founded by current chairman John Murphy who is proud of
the company's enviable position as one that can be relied on to
deliver, whatever the circumstances. The two-year programme that
commenced in October 2004 involved the auditing of all business
units and activities that include design, fabrication,
construction, installation, commissioning, testing, repair,
maintenance and refurbishment of civil engineering, tunnelling
and utility works across all market sectors. The Group, which
already operated a system compatible with The HSE's guideline
document HSG 65, decided to seek certification against OHSAS
18001 in 2003 after achieving accreditation against ISO 9001 and
ISO 14001 standards. The firm plans to fully integrate the
health and safety system by early 2006. Group Safety Systems
Manager, Ernie Donnell commented: "In always trying to attain
the highest standards of safety in all we do the company wanted
to implement a management system for health and safety which was
compatible with the plan-do-check-act process employed in our
quality and environmental management systems, and we recognise
the benefits of having an integrated and effective management
system and a proven and internationally recognised standard."
